New Delhi: For the first time under the CAA, 14 refugees have been handed citizenship. The Home Ministry has given certifications to 14 refugees in this regard. The Home Ministry confirmed that 14 petitioners in Delhi received citizenship certificates today. Many other candidates receive digitally signed certificates via email. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla greeted the candidates and awarded them their citizenship certificates. He explained the features of the Citizenship Amendment Rules of 2024. The Central Government has begun the process of providing citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who fled to India after being persecuted in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
Actually, the Central Government issued a notification on CAA on March 11, and applications for citizenship were sought under it. The candidate has to have lived in the nation for at least 12 months prior to applying. The Citizenship Amendment Bill was first tabled into the Lok Sabha in 2016. It passed from here but got stalled in the Rajya Sabha. Following that, it was introduced again in the Lok Sabha in 2019, during the Modi government’s second term. This bill was enacted by both chambers and, with the President’s approval, became law on January 10, 2020. Its gazette notification was issued on March 11 this year.
