Veteran Bengali actor Manoj Mitra passed away, breathed his last at the age of 85

Veteran Bengali actor and renowned theatre artist Manoj Mitra has passed away due to age-related health issues. The 85-year-old was admitted to the hospital due to breathing difficulties and imbalance in sodium and potassium levels, among other health complications. However, his condition deteriorated this morning and he breathed his last at around 8.50 am.

Manoj Mitra’s Evergreen Work

Born on December 22, 1938 in Dhulihar (then undivided Bengal), Mitra had a career that spanned several decades, beginning with his entry into Kolkata’s theatre scene in 1957. He made his big screen debut in 1979, marking the beginning of his illustrious film career. Manoj Mitra earned praise for his stellar performance in Tapan Sinha’s ‘Bancharamer Bagan’. He also appeared in Satyajit Ray’s classics ‘Ghare Baire’ and ‘Ganashatru’.

Manoj Mitra also won an Academy Award

Manoj Mitra worked with acclaimed directors such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Majumdar, Shakti Samanta and Gautam Ghosh in his long film career. A prolific playwright, Mitra had written over 100 plays and received several awards for his prolific work including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Best Playwright in 1985.
