Chandigarh, September 23, 2023 – The Chandigarh chapter of the Chamber of Commerce (UVM) has called for the establishment of a government Trader Welfare Board in the city to address the issues faced by traders. In a letter sent to the Central Home Minister, Amit Shah, UVM President Kailash Chand Jain emphasized that both the central and state governments have established Trader Welfare Boards to relay traders’ problems to the government, offering potential solutions. He highlighted the significance of realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Ease of Doing Business” and urged the creation of a Chandigarh Trader Welfare Board. Jain suggested that the board’s leadership and members should be drawn from the trader community, as they possess a deep understanding of traders’ challenges and can facilitate effective solutions.
Jain also pointed out that several boards and corporations in Chandigarh, such as the Chandigarh Housing Board and Market Committee, have shifted from having elected representatives to administrative officers as their heads. He argued that having elected representatives, who can better understand the needs and concerns of the public, would be more effective in the administration of these organizations. He proposed that Chandigarh should ensure public participation by appointing prominent individuals from various sectors as the heads of these boards and corporations, a model successfully employed by certain government bodies like the Scheduled Castes Commission, Women’s Commission, Minority Commission, and Employee Commission in Chandigarh. Jain advocated for the establishment of similar bodies in Chandigarh to ensure that the public benefits from their initiatives.
