Chandigarh, October 12, 2023 – In a significant organizational reshuffle, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appointed Jatinder Pal Malhotra as the new President of its Chandigarh unit. Malhotra will be taking over the role from former Chandigarh BJP chief Arun Sood.
The announcement was made by BJP national president JP Nadda on Sunday. Malhotra’s appointment is seen as a bid to revamp the party unit in Chandigarh ahead of the upcoming municipal elections next year.
A prominent lawyer based in Chandigarh, Malhotra has been associated with the BJP for over two decades. He started his political career as a member of the Chandigarh BJP Yuva Morcha and has held various positions in the party over the years.
Malhotra expressed gratitude towards the party leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility. He said, “I thank Nadda ji for showing faith in me. My priority will be to strengthen the party at the grassroots and ensure BJP’s victory in the 2022 municipal polls.”
Meanwhile, Arun Sood congratulated his successor and said he will continue to work to further the BJP’s interests in the region. Sood has been heading the Chandigarh BJP unit since 2019.
The change in guard comes just months ahead of the Chandigarh municipal corporation elections scheduled for December 2022. Malhotra will be looking to consolidate BJP’s position and deny the Aam Aadmi Party from opening their account in the UT, which it failed to do in the previous elections.
