BJP had won the 3 Mayoral seats in Chandigarh and ensures its victory. Today the result was made out in which BJP won the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Davesh Moudgil won the post of Mayor, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon became Senior Deputy Mayor and Vinod Aggarwal Deputy Mayor.
Moudgil will be the 22nd Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Moudgil secured the seat by getting 22 votes as against his Congress rival Davinder Singh Babla who got five votes. Dhillon bagged 21 votes against Congress rival Sheela Phool Singh who got 6 votes where as Aggarwal got 22 votes against Congress candidate Ravinder Kaur who could barely get the 4 votes and one vote was declared invalid.
Asha Kumari Jaswal who was the former Mayor and Ravi Kant Sharma both the BJP rebel had earlier filed their nominations as Independents but after a truce with Moudgil they withdrew from the nominations on Monday.
In the 27-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, BJP is the ruler with 20 councillors, Congress having 4, Shiromani Akali Dal 1, Independent 1 and one vote is of MP Kirron Kher of the BJP.
The 9 nominated councillors could not vote this year as according to Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2017 the right to exercise franchise was st-rucked down.
Moudgil is considered close to former BJP MP Satya Pal Jain.
