During the screening of Kalki 2898 AD at this year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the film’s producers Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt shared an interesting update about its next part. In a conversation, the two also talked about their plans to distribute the film in China and Korea.
Speaking to Deadline, Swapna and Priyanka said that about 35 to 40 percent of the film’s sequel has been shot. They intend to resume production in the second quarter of 2025 and complete the film by the end of the year. During this conversation, they hoped to continue expanding the Kalki cinematic universe and expressed the possibility of many other titles coming up.
Swapna said, “The first part has done very well in India, North America and the UK, among other places. The film has the potential to make a mark worldwide and we want the first part to reach as many countries as possible before releasing the second part.” When asked if the film was inspired by Marvel, Swapna said, “I wouldn’t say it’s inspired, but it has given us a lot to learn. I think it’s a great achievement to present a visual experience that others have compared to Marvel.”
Kalki 2898 AD premiered at the 4,000-seat BIFF Theatre at Busan Cinema Center, the festival’s largest theatre. Kalki 2898 AD is the third highest-grossing Telugu film of all time. “We have started crossing all kinds of boundaries. Telugu is now one of the most important languages in Indian cinema,” Swapna said.
Kalki 2898 AD is directed by Nag Ashwin, who is also Priyanka’s husband. Talking about her sister Sapna, Priyanka said, “We can depend on each other, whether it’s something negative or positive. We know that we are always there for each other to talk to each other, to sort things out.” Both Swapna and Priyanka are also working on Pradeep Advaitham’s Champion, which will depict a love story set in the year 1955. They are also currently working on the pre-production of Aakasam Lo Oka Tara, directed by Pawan Sadineni.
