Ashok Tanwar has a long association with Congress. In 1999, he became the secretary of NSUI and was its president in 2003. In 2009, he became an MP from Sirsa Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket and was the President of Haryana Congress from 2014 to 2019. However, in 2019 he left the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress, then joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022. Eventually he joined the BJP.
