Goa, 23 April2024: Tuesday: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to the controversial statement of Captain Viriato, Congress candidate from South Goa in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Addressing a public meeting in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said – Congress has now started another big game. Earlier, the Congress MP from Karnataka had said that South India will be declared a separate country. Now the Congress candidate from Goa is saying that the Indian Constitution does not apply to Goa. He is clearly saying that the Constitution was imposed on Goa. He has told these things to the prince of Congress (in reference to Rahul Gandhi). Is this an insult to Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar or not? Is this an insult to the Constitution of India or not? Is this tampering with the Constitution of the country or not?
According to the Prime Minister, “The Congress candidate is saying that the Constitution will not work in Goa. The people of Jammu and Kashmir also used to say this, you blessed Modi and today they have been silenced and today the Constitution of the country is working there. Baba Saheb’s Constitution, which did not work in Jammu and Kashmir, has been implemented there as well.”
During the public meeting in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, PM Modi further said – The Congress candidate is saying that he has told this to his leader (Rahul Gandhi) and making it public means that the leader has given him verbal consent. This is a well-planned move to break the country. Congress has been rejected by a large part of the country. In such a situation, it wants to create such an island in the country. Today they are rejecting the Constitution in Goa and tomorrow these people will commit the sin of rejecting Baba Saheb’s Constitution in the entire country.
This entire matter is related to March 10, 2019, about which Captain Viriato told in an election public meeting on Monday (April 22, 2024). He said that he had then talked to Rahul Gandhi on various issues related to Goa. Among the issues discussed was the demand for dual citizenship for the people of Goa. In such a situation, Rahul Gandhi asked Captain Viriato whether it is constitutional? To this, the Congress leader replied, “No.”
The former Congress President had also said then that in such a situation there can be no discussion on this. In response, Captain Viriato had said, “The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950. Goa was not a part of India then. When we became independent in 1961, that Constitution (while making which we were not a part of that process) was imposed on us. Now you people tell us that this (dual citizenship) is unconstitutional.”
