Is Wrestlers’ Protest Real or Political? Two FIRs on Brij Bhushan

Wrestlers’ agitation continues against the allegations of sexual harassment against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Sunday (30th April) is the 8th day of the wrestlers’ dharna at Jantar Mantar. Meanwhile, the Congress has sought support from superstar Amitabh Bachchan on the issue of wrestlers. Congress leader Salman Anees Soz has appealed to Amitabh Bachchan and other superstars to support the wrestlers. The Congress leader tweeted, “Dear Amitabh Bachchan, You must know about women wrestlers demanding justice. They deserve support from the most influential voices in the country. Your T 4633 can help raise their voice. Please raise your voice.”

Why Protest?

Indian wrestlers protesting against their chief’s alleged sexual harassment struggle to arrange even basic necessities at Jantar Mantar, the protest site. Wrestling stars like Bajrang Poonia, including Olympians, resumed a sit-in protest in New Delhi capital on Sunday and alleged that dozens of women in national camps faced harassment at the hands of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

Two FIRs on Brij Bhushan

The Delhi Police on Friday registered two FIRs against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, with one of the cases filed under the POCSO Act. “The first one pertains to allegations leveled by a minor victim which is registered under the POCSO Act along with relevant IPC sections concerning outraging of modesty etc. The second FIR is registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints tendered by other, adult complainants under relevant sections pertaining to outraging of modesty etc,” the statement added.

Humari Baat feels that protests by the wrestlers might be true but calling political leaders and Bollywood in your protest is making it politically motivated, moreover, one has to trust our courts and constitution.
