Om Birla Becomes Speaker Of Lok Sabha

Om Birla became the Speaker of Lok Sabha for the second consecutive time, NDA won the election by voice vote

New Delhi: Om Birla has been elected by voice vote for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Om Birla defeated Congress’ Kodikunnil Suresh (K Suresh) in the election on Wednesday (June 26).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the name of Om Birla for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. It was approved by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. At the same time, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant proposed the name of Kodikunnil Suresh for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker and RSP leader NK Premachandran seconded it, but K Suresh lost the election.

After Om Birla was elected Speaker of Lok Sabha, he was made the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took Birla to the Speaker’s seat. During this, when Birla took the Speaker’s seat, PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Rijiju congratulated him.

What did PM Modi say?
Congratulating Speaker Om Birla, PM Modi said that it is the good fortune of the House that you are occupying this chair for the second time. Best wishes to you from me and the entire House. You have got a huge responsibility to occupy this post for the second time in this important period of Amritkaal. We all believe that you will guide all of us for the next five years.
PM Modi said that ‘this sweet smile on your face keeps the entire House happy’. Becoming the Speaker for the second time is a record in itself. Balram Jakhar got the opportunity to serve as the Speaker for the second term after working for 5 years and today you are doing the same.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?
Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and said that the government has power, but we also represent the people. It is important that the voice of the opposition must be heard in this House. I hope you will let us speak. Suppressing the voice of the opposition is undemocratic.

In fact, the opposition alliance ‘India’ took the decision to contest the Lok Sabha Speaker’s election at the last moment when senior BJP leaders did not agree to the pre-condition that in return for supporting NDA candidate Birla, the alliance ‘India’ should be given the post of Deputy Speaker.

Who has how much power in the Lok Sabha?

BJP may have missed the absolute majority in the Lok Sabha elections, but BJP’s alliance NDA got the absolute majority. 293 MPs of NDA have won and reached the Lok Sabha, in which BJP alone has 240 MPs. Apart from this, there is support of 16 from TDP, 12 from JDU, 7 from Shiv Sena Shinde faction, 5 from Chirag Paswan’s LJP, 2 from Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD, 2 from Pawan Kalyan’s Jansena, 2 from Kumar Swamy’s JDS, 1 from Anupriya Patel’s Apna Dal, 1 from Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustan Awami League, 1 from Ajit Pawar faction’s NCP, 1 from UPPL, 1 from Assam Gana Parishad, 1 from Sudesh Mahato’s AJSU and 1 from SKM. That means Om Birla has the support of 293 MPs.

On the other hand, if we talk about the India Block alliance, the opposition is far behind the majority figure in the Lok Sabha elections. 234 MPs were elected to the Lok Sabha. But now this number of seats has reduced because Rahul Gandhi has left the Wayanad seat and Akhilesh Yadav has left the Kannauj seat.
