Ratan Tata, the veteran businessman, died at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital
Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the chairman of the Tata Group and a veteran industrialist, passed away on Wednesday night. The 86-year-old, who was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to ill health, bid farewell to the world. Just two days ago, he had dismissed any rumors about his health and had stated that he was fine. The political world has expressed grief over Ratan Tata’s demise.
N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, issued a statement on the occasion. He said, “We are deeply saddened to bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata. He was an exceptional leader whose unparalleled contributions shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation. For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairman. For me, he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend.”
He further added, “With unwavering commitment, under Ratan Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group expanded excellence, integrity, and innovation. He always remained true to his moral compass. Mr. Tata’s dedication to philanthropy and social development has been impactful. Millions of lives, from education to healthcare, have been deeply touched by his initiatives and will continue to benefit generations to come. PM Modi Mourns Ratan Tata’s Demise
PM Modi expressed grief over Ratan Tata’s demise in a post on X. PM Modi said, “Shri Ratan Tata was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary individual. He provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest and most respected business houses. His contributions went far beyond the boardroom. His simplicity, kindness, and unwavering commitment to making our society better endeared him to so many.”
PM Modi further stated, “One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata was his passion for dreaming big. He was at the forefront of supporting causes like education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare. My mind is filled with countless conversations with Shri Ratan Tata. When I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, I used to meet him frequently. We would exchange views on various issues. I found his perspective very enriching. This continued when I came to Delhi. I am deeply saddened by his passing away. In this hour of grief, my condolences are with his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Portable cold storage arrangements for last rites
Portable cold storage morgue has been arranged for Ratan Tata’s body. His body will be brought to the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) by 4 pm today for people to pay their last respects. Many industrialists, businessmen, actors and politicians may visit his house today.
The body will be taken to Worli crematorium
Ratan Tata’s body has been taken to his house in Colaba and family members have also left the hospital. Special CP Deven Bharti has personally accompanied the family members with a convoy and ambulance. His body will be taken to Worli crematorium. This is the same place where Cyrus Mistry was cremated.
Two days ago he had said – I am absolutely fine
Earlier on Monday also there was news of Ratan Tata’s health deteriorating, after which a few hours later a post was shared from Ratan Tata’s own x (Twitter) handle. In this post it was written that thanks to everyone for worrying about me! I am absolutely fine. There is nothing to worry about, I have come to the hospital for routine checkup of diseases related to old age. But the country will be in pain that this time he could not return from the hospital, and left for his final journey forever.

Before taking over the reins of the business house that started in 1868, Ratan Tata worked in Tata Steel, Jamshedpur in the 70s. When he understood all the nuances of the business, he made a strong entry into the group and on the strength of his hard work and ability, he took the domestic business to great heights. Ratan Tata took over the reins of the entire group in 1991.
