Renowned Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi on 1st January. The meeting, described by Dosanjh as a “fantastic start” to the New Year, centered around discussions on music, culture, and India’s potential to host large-scale music festivals.
During their conversation, Prime Minister Modi praised Dosanjh’s journey from humble beginnings to international stardom, highlighting the pride India feels in his global achievements. Dosanjh, in turn, expressed admiration for the Prime Minister’s leadership and personal journey, noting how Modi’s position and actions resonate with the common man.
A notable topic of discussion was India’s capacity to host music festivals surpassing the scale of international events like Coachella. Dosanjh emphasized the country’s rich cultural heritage and the potential to organize grand music festivals that could attract global audiences.
However, the meeting has not been without controversy. Farmer leaders, particularly those involved in ongoing protests, have criticized Dosanjh for engaging with the Prime Minister instead of showing solidarity with their cause. They questioned his commitment to the farmers’ movement, recalling his previous support during the 2020 protests.
In response to the backlash, Dosanjh has maintained that his meeting with the Prime Minister was focused on promoting India’s cultural and artistic potential on the global stage. He has not issued a detailed statement addressing the farmers’ concerns directly.
This meeting underscores the complex interplay between art, politics, and social movements in India. While it highlights the potential for cultural diplomacy and the promotion of India’s artistic heritage, it also brings to the forefront the sensitivities involved when public figures engage with political leaders amidst ongoing social issues.
