Know who are the new Supreme Court judges Justice N Koteshwar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan

New Delhi: Two new judges have been appointed in the Supreme Court. Judge N. Kotishwar Singh and Judge R. Mahadevan have been promoted as judges of the Supreme Court. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal informed about these appointments through the social media site ‘X’. After the swearing-in of both the judges, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, will be 34. This is the maximum approved number of judges in the apex court.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice N Kotishwar Singh has become the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Judge Mahadevan is currently the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice N. Kotishwar Singh and Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice Justice R Mahadevan to be appointed as judges in the Supreme Court.

Now the Central Government has accepted this recommendation, after which Justice Kotishwar Singh has become a judge in the Supreme Court. Singh is the first judge from Manipur to achieve this success. There are 34 judges in the Supreme Court including the Chief Justice and till now two posts were vacant. As soon as Judge Kotishwar Singh and R. Mahadevan take oath, the number of judges will reach 34.

Who is Kotishwar Singh, the first judge from Manipur

Justice Singh was born on March 1, 1963 in Imphal, Manipur. His father’s name was (late) Justice N Ibtombi Singh, who was the first Advocate General of the Guwahati High Court. Before going to the Guwahati High Court, he practiced in the Supreme Court for some time. In 2008, he was designated as a senior advocate of the Guwahati High Court. In 2011, Justice Kotishwar Singh was made an additional judge of the Guwahati High Court and in 2012 he became a permanent judge. On the creation of the Manipur High Court in the year 2013, he was appointed as its judge. In 2018, he was again sent to the Guwahati High Court. After this, he became the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in 2023.

Who is Justice R Mahadevan?

Justice R Mahadevan was born on June 10, 1963 in Chennai. He obtained his law degree from Madras Law College. He worked as a lawyer for 25 years, specializing in civil, criminal and writ petitions related to indirect taxes, customs and central excise matters.
During this period, he also worked as Additional Government Advocate (Tax) for the Government of Tamil Nadu, Additional Central Government Standing Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India in the Madras High Court.
Justice Mahadevan was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court in 2013. He is currently working as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
