Forest fire incidents are being monitored from ISRO’s Jio portal

Uttarkashi Forest Division is monitoring the forest fire with the help of the geoportal Bhuvan developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Through satellite data, this Jio portal is capable of giving accurate information about forest fire incidents.

There are six ranges under Uttarkashi Forest Division. These include Barahat, Mukhem, Dunda, Dharasu, Taknaur and Gangotri ranges. Large scale incidents of forest fire occur here during the fire season which runs from 15 February to 15 June. In the past, the department depended on crew stations for information about forest fires.In the present technological era, the department has started using Geo Portal Bhuvan developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation, which is capable of providing accurate information about the situation of events like cyclone, drought, earthquake, flood and landslides besides forest fire. It is also called the Indian version of Google Maps developed by ISRO. This software application allows users to view a 2D/3D representation of the Earth’s surface. The portal has been specifically designed for India viewing, offering the highest resolution in the region. It provides detailed visualization of Indian locations with a spatial resolution of up to one metre, compared to other virtual globe software.

Technical help is also being taken to monitor forest fire incidents. ISRO’s Jio portal Bhuvan is very helpful in this. However, at present the incidents of forest fire have reduced due to continued intermittent rains.
