Scene at the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee office in Lucknow
To revive the dormant Congress organization in Uttar Pradesh ahead of elections, the party is emulating the successful training module used in Chhattisgarh. Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, 1.75 lakh workers from 388 assembly constituencies have been trained.
In the 2017 assembly elections, the Congress could win only seven seats. He contested the elections in alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Its last credible score in the state was 31 years ago in the 1991 elections when it won 46 seats.
The party has failed to halt the decline that began in 1993, when the party fell from 46 to 28. The grassroots workers in most of the constituencies had left the party over the years due to the party’s dismal electoral performance. The unimaginable task of rebuilding the organization at the grassroots level.
Vinod Verma, political advisor to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, said, “We will get benefit from this whole exercise but we cannot estimate the quantum of our profit right now.”
The party does not want to speculate about its performance in the elections. Several leaders who spoke to The Hindu said it was not about winning the Congress election.
