Delhi, India – Today, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has become the largest party in the country, has emerged as a nationalist political party, and its main goal is to give India the highest position on the world stage. To fulfill this goal, the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed on April 6, 1980, in a workers’ convention held at Kotla Ground in New Delhi, and in this convention, the first president Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected. As soon as the party was established, the Bharatiya Janata Party registered its strong participation in Indian democracy by paying special attention to issues of international, national, and public interest. And his strength gave new dimensions to Indian politics. If we talk about the one-party democratic system dominated by the Congress, then as soon as it came into existence, the Bharatiya Janata Party played an important role in ushering in a coalition era by making Indian politics bipolar.
Although the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed on April 6, 1980, if we talk about its history, its history is linked to Bharatiya Jana Sangh. After independence and with the partition of the country, a new political situation had arisen in the country. After Gandhi’s assassination, a new political conspiracy started being hatched in the country by banning Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Along with this, after the death of Sardar Patel, Nehru’s influence and authority started becoming stronger in the Congress. Or it can be said that due to the absence of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, Congress fell into the grip of ‘Nehruism’.
A different environment started coming into existence in the country such as minority appeasement, license, country permit-quota raj, negligence on national security, knee-jerk policy on national issues like Kashmir, etc., ignoring Indian interests in international affairs etc. Nationalists started harassing the citizens.
Angered by India’s silence on the growing ‘Nehruism’ in the country and the atrocities on Hindu minorities in neighboring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee resigned from the Nehru Cabinet. On the other hand, the volunteers of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh also felt the brunt of the ban and the Sangh also started feeling that they were being targeted politically for their benefit. When such a situation arose, the need for a nationalist political party started being felt in the country. And realizing this need, Bharatiya Jana Sangh was established on October 21, 1951, in Raghomal Arya Kanya High School, Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee. After this, Bharatiya Jana Sangh, under the leadership of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, launched a movement on the issue of Kashmir and national integrity and strongly opposed giving any kind of privilege to Kashmir. Since Nehruism was increasing in Congress, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was imprisoned in Kashmir and died there under mysterious circumstances.
Bharatiya Jana Sangh also played a very important role in the India-China war and strongly opposed Nehru’s policies on national security. In 1967, for the first time, under the leadership of Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, the long-held monopoly of Congress on Indian politics was broken, due to which Congress was defeated in the assembly elections of many states.
If we talk about the seventies, then in the seventies, public dissatisfaction started emerging across the country against the Congress government which was becoming autocratic under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Along with the Navnirman movement of Gujarat, the student movement started in Bihar. Anger started erupting among the people.
Seeing these movements, Congress adopted the path of suppressing these movements. Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan accepted the leadership of the movement and public dissatisfaction against the Congress rule became vocal across the country.
In 1971, an external emergency was imposed on the country in the context of the India-Pakistan war and rebellion in Bangladesh, which remained in force even after the end of the war. The demand for its removal also started becoming intense. Panicked, Indira Gandhi’s Congress government tried to crush the voice of the people through repression. As a result, on June 25, 1975, the emergency was imposed on the country for the second time in the form of an ‘Internal Emergency’ under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution.
‘Censor’ was imposed on the newspapers of that time. Also many other nationalist organizations including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were banned. Thousands of workers were arrested and put in jail under ‘MISA’. On the call of Jayaprakash Narayan, a new national party ‘Janata Party’ was formed. The opposition parties contested the elections on one platform and due to short time period for the elections, ‘Janata Party’ could not be fully formed as a political party. Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the general elections and ‘Janata Party’ and other opposition parties came to power with an overwhelming majority. As per earlier announcement, on May 1, 1977, Bharatiya Jana Sangh merged itself with the Janata Party in a convention of about 5000 delegates.
But the experiment of Janata Party did not last long and in just two-two and a half years the contradictions started appearing on the surface. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Congress also did not refrain from playing all its political tricks to break the Janata Party. The issue of ‘dual-membership’ was strongly raised by the Bharatiya Jana Sangh to isolate the members who had joined the Janata Party.
Objections started being raised on having association with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and it was said that members of Janata Party cannot become members of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. For this reason, on April 4, 1980, the National Working Committee of the Janata Party banned its members from being members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Members formerly associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh opposed this and separated from the Janata Party and announced a new organization ‘Bharatiya Janata Party’ on April 6, 1980. Thus the Bharatiya Janata Party was established.
If seen, the Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved many invaluable achievements after coming into existence. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected the first President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and with its establishment, the BJP became fully active in national politics. Non-Congress parties again come together on the issue of Bofors and corruption.
In the 1989 general elections, Congress faced a massive defeat under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi. V.P. The BJP gave external support to the National Front government formed under the leadership of Singh.
Meanwhile, the movement for the Ram temple also started in the country. The then BJP President Lal Krishna Advani started the Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya. However given the huge public support being received by the Ram Mandir movement and fearing the increasing popularity of BJP, Advani’s Rath Yatra was stopped midway. As a result, the BJP withdrew support from the National Front government.
V.P. Singh’s government fell and with the support of Congress, Chandrashekhar became the next Prime Minister of the country and the public support of BJP continued to increase in the coming general elections. Meanwhile, the country was ruled by the Congress under the leadership of Narasimha Rao and the United Front governments with the support of the Congress, during which many ‘records’ of corruption, anarchy, and misgovernance were established.
In the 1996 general elections, the BJP obtained a total of 161 seats in the Lok Sabha. Let us tell you that BJP won 85 seats in 1989, 120 seats in 1991, and 161 seats in 1996 in the Lok Sabha elections. Public support of the BJP was continuously increasing. For the first time, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the BJP government took oath in 1996, but due to lack of sufficient support, this government could run only for 13 days. After this, in the general elections of 1998, the BJP won 182 seats and the National Democratic Alliance government was sworn in under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. But the government fell by one vote during the trust vote in the Lok Sabha due to the withdrawal of support by the AIADMK under the leadership of Jayalalitha, due to the unethical conduct of the then Congress Chief Minister of Orissa, Girridhar Gomang, in obtaining membership of the Lok Sabha while still in office. Did not leave and voted against the government during the trust vote.
It is because of this illegal and unethical conduct of Congress that the country had to face general elections again. In 1999, the BJP again won 182 seats and the National Democratic Alliance got 306 seats. Once again, the BJP-led NDA government was formed under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The BJP-led NDA government established many new patterns of development under the leadership of Atal Bihari. Successes like the Pokhran nuclear blast, the successful launch of the Agni missile, the Kargil victory, etc raised India’s stature on international platforms. Many achievements are recorded in the account of this government like the construction of national highways, improvement in public distribution system, new initiatives and experiments in education and health, rapid development in the fields of agriculture, science and industry as well as keeping inflation from rising.
Contribution of Bharatiya Janata Party in Indian politics
If we talk about the contribution of Bharatiya Janata Party in Indian politics, then Bharatiya Jana Sangh is the only party that continuously fought for national integrity, complete merger of Kashmir in India, resistance to Pakistani aggression in tribal guise, abolition of permit system and Article 370 and separatism. Or is it BJP, otherwise survival of Kashmir was almost impossible
Current status of Bharatiya Janata Party
If seen today, BJP has emerged as a major nationalist force in the country and is continuously determined for good governance, development, unity and integrity of the country.
For 10 years, the party played an active and brilliant role in opposition. In 2014, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, for the first time in the country, a government was formed with full majority of BJP, which today is rebuilding a glorious India with the proclamation of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. Under the leadership of National President Shri Amit Shah, BJP has become the largest political party in the world with approximately 11 crore members.
On May 26, 2014, Narendra Damodardas Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. The BJP government under the leadership of Modi has created a record by achieving unprecedented achievements in a short period of time. Narendra Modi as Prime Minister has restored India’s prestige across the world and restored people’s faith in politics.
He started a new era through many innovative schemes. Economic and social reforms provide a way to lead a secure life and new policies ranging from credit to fertilizers for Indian farmers like Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, Soil Health Card, etc. have awakened the rapid development of agriculture. Be it the Adarsh Gram Yojana, the cleanliness campaign or the campaign to make India healthy with the help of yoga, all these steps have given a new energy to the country. BJP’s Modi government has taken strong steps towards modernizing and empowering India with schemes like ‘Make in India’, ‘Skill India’, Amrit Mission, Deendayal Gram Jyoti Yojana, Digital India. Many schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana are ushering in a new revolution in the country. The BJP government has gifted the countrymen the world’s largest social security scheme.
In the first phase, when all the leaders of the freedom movement had joined the ruling party, the opposition was either non-existent or consisted of leftists devoid of patriotism, then the Jana Sangh accepted the challenge and gave a strong opposition to India’s democracy in the form of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. . In 1967, Jan Sangh became the second largest party.
the only political party to raise the issue of electoral reforms is Jan Sangh or BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly emphasized democratic norms and did not allow them to be violated.
The story of response to the Emergency reinforces our democratic integrity. The only political party to raise the issue of electoral reforms is Jan Sangh or BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly emphasized democratic norms and did not allow them to be violated.

As far as politics is concerned, it is important to know that it is not just a means of gaining power. The main task of politics is to take the society on the path of progress in the desired direction. This requires a consistent approach, which is achieved through a consistent ideology. Today all the political parties of India are victims of ideological void. BJP is regulating the organization on the basis of consistent ideologies of cultural nationalism, integral humanism and Panchnishthas. These will also be properly reflected in the government policy.
Clean politics and good governance is the guarantee of Bharatiya Janata Party, 10 years of central rule and BJP governments in the states have given better governance than the governments of other parties. The process of positive good governance is going on at a fast pace under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
So today we learned the complete history of Bharatiya Janata Party. If we talk about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, then after talking to the public, we come to know that this time also the public wants to form the BJP government and for the third time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is elected. Wants to see him as the Prime Minister of the country.
