Zirakpur. There was a time when during elections, candidates used to get rickshaws fitted with mics, put up cloth banners and paint walls etc. to convey their message to the public.
Now the methods of publicity have changed with time. In this election, social media is proving to be a powerful medium to convey one’s message.
Candidates are not only expressing their views on social media, but earlier where opponents were defeated by gathering crowd in street meetings, now how many people are following you on social media and how many are searching for you. This is determining the popularity of the candidate.
Shiromani Akali Dal candidate from Patiala Lok Sabha constituency N.K. Sharma has defeated his opponents in this matter. Amrish Tyagi, in-charge of N.K.Sharma’s social media war room, released a report based on the publicity so far and said that the campaign is in full swing. According to Google Analytics, #NKSHARMA and #NKSharmazirakpur are among the most searched hashtags.
His election campaign slogan #patialedapehredar is also maintaining its place in the top trends of Twitter. Sharma’s campaign on social media is attracting the youth a lot. Recently, for the first time in Patiala, a program on youth’s questions and NK Sharma’s answers was organized by a candidate.
Amrish Tyagi said that due to the development work done during Sharma’s tenure and his impeccable image, the popularity of the hashtag can be gauged by looking at the reactions, views and likes of people on his Facebook page in the last few days.
This time there is an all-round contest in Patiala seat. Tyagi said that Preneet Kaur has 2 lakh 29 thousand followers on Facebook, while Congress candidate Dr. Dharamveer Gandhi has 96 thousand followers and AAP candidate Dr. Balbir Singh has 43 thousand followers.
