Manish Tewari, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting of India, was born on 8 December 1965 in a political family of Chandigarh. His father, Dr VN Tiwari, a professor in the Punjabi department of Panjab University, died while out on a morning walk in the Chandigarh Sikh riots of 1984.

Manish Tiwari’s mother Dr. Amrit Kaur Tiwari is a dentist, who has been a professor and head of the department at the Oral Health Sciences Centre. She was also the Dean of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.
