Ramnagar: In the Corbett Tiger Reserve area, a young man who had gone into the forest with his family to collect firewood was attacked and killed by a tiger. The tiger dragged the young man into the dense forest. Upon receiving the information, a team of forest officials, along with the help of villagers, recovered the victim’s body. Angered by the incident, the villagers placed the body in front of the Sawalde Forest Checkpost and started protesting, demanding that the man-eating tiger be killed. The villagers’ anger subsided only after officials intervened and pacified them in the evening. Following the tiger attack, the Forest Department has increased patrols in the area for safety.
According to the details, around 2:30 PM on Thursday, Prem Singh (35), a daily wage labourer from the Sawalde Nepali Basti near the Corbett Tiger Reserve, went to the nearby forest with his children to collect firewood. During this time, a tiger hidden in thick bushes attacked Prem and dragged him into the dense jungle. Prem’s nine-year-old son, who had accompanied him to the forest, ran back to the village and informed others that his father had been taken by the tiger. The villagers reported the incident to the forest officials at the Sawalde Checkpost. Forest officials, along with the villagers, searched the forest and found Prem’s partially eaten body about 500 meters from the scene of the attack.
Outraged by the incident, the villagers placed Prem’s body on the road in front of the Sawalde Forest Checkpost and began protesting. The villagers demanded that the man-eating tiger be shot and senior officials be summoned to the spot. Former block chief Sanjay Negi stated that no responsible officer from the Forest Department had arrived at the scene even an hour and a half after the incident. He criticized the Forest Department for making big claims about villagers’ safety after such incidents but being negligent in ensuring protection once the anger of the villagers subsides. As of the time of reporting, the villagers were still protesting with the victim’s body, blocking traffic on the road.
