Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand government has set an ambitious goal to establish 3,000 women’s groups by 2025 under the “Uttarakhand Millet Mission.” This initiative aims to rejuvenate traditional farming by promoting the cultivation of indigenous grains like Manduwa (Finger Millet) and Jhangora (Barnyard Millet), which are not only nutritious but also well-suited to the region’s unique agro-climatic conditions.
The state government is committed to empowering rural women, providing them with the tools, training, and resources necessary to revive the region’s traditional agricultural practices. By organizing women into self-help groups, the mission aims to create sustainable livelihoods while simultaneously preserving the rich agricultural heritage of Uttarakhand.
Millets, known for their resilience to climate change and minimal water requirements, have seen a revival globally due to their health benefits. They are rich in essential nutrients, including fiber, protein, and micronutrients. These crops also support the state’s environmental goals by promoting sustainable farming practices.
The Uttarakhand Millet Mission’s support will include seed distribution, training in sustainable farming techniques, and assistance in marketing and distribution. The state government aims to create a robust supply chain that connects local producers directly to consumers, ensuring better profits for farmers and promoting the consumption of these nutritious grains.
This initiative is expected to not only benefit women farmers but also strengthen the state’s economy by revitalizing traditional agricultural systems. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership in launching this mission underscores the government’s dedication to women’s empowerment, sustainable farming, and the promotion of local food security. Through this mission, Uttarakhand is taking significant strides toward achieving a greener and more self-reliant future.
