CGC Jhanjeri, National Commission for Women in Collaboration with Punjabi University Patiala & Panjab University, Chandigarh organized One-Day Awareness Seminar on NRI marriages: Do’s & Don’ts – a Way Forward
Jhanjeri, Mohali (Punjab) [India], July, 2022: Seeing the present scenario and hype of getting married to the NRIs in Punjab, North India’s fastest growing educational institute, Chandigarh Group Of Colleges, Jhanjeri, National Commission for Women in collaboration with Punjabi University Patiala & Panjab University, Chandigarh organized one-day awareness seminar on NRI marriages: Do’s & Don’ts – A Way Forward at CGC, Jhanjeri (Auditorium).
The event was adorned by enthusiastic people of nearby villages resulting in 250+ in total along with the faculty and a few students. Herein eminent personalities like Ms. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson National Commission for Women (NCW), Mr. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Minister, Rural Development & Panchayats, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Dairy Development and NRI Affairs, Punjab, Prof. Arvind, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University and Ms. Meeta Rajivlichan, IAS, Member Secretary, NCW graced the event and enthusiastically participated while sharing their thoughts forward to make people of Punjab aware about the Do’s & Don’ts of NRI marriages.
Addressing the seminar, our eminent personalities collectively talked about the problems of Punjab women trapped in fraudulent marriages increasingly. This has underscored the urgent need to build safeguards and protect our women. They spread the word about the eagerness of people from Punjab not to let go of such lucrative marriage offer, while ignoring even the common cautions that are otherwise observed in traditional matchmaking. They talked about the aggravated risks in such marriage being ‘isolated’ away from home in an alien land, facing language constraints, communication problems, lack of proper information about the local criminal justice, police and legal system. The situation is worsened by lack of support network of friends and family and monetary constraints which leaves the deserted wife completely helpless and stranded.
Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on NRI Marriages
Mr. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Minister, Rural Development & Panchayats herein talked about how 2000+ woman every month are brutally battered, assaulted, abused both mentally and physically, malnourished, confined and ill treated just for the sake to get abroad. His message to all the villagers was – making people understand the significance of higher-studies and making them educated, capable enough to choose the right partner for themselves and spend their life with the contentment.
