Om Birla vs K. Suresh… Who will become the Lok Sabha Speaker??

New Delhi: The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected MPs was held in the Lok Sabha on Monday and Tuesday. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to various Union Ministers, MPs of the ruling and opposition parties have taken oath. After the swearing-in of the MPs is over, now it is the turn of the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker. For a long time, the Lok Sabha Speaker has been elected in Parliament without any opposition. But this time the opposition parties have also fielded their candidates. Om Birla is contesting for the post of Speaker from the ruling BJP-led NDA alliance, while Kodikunnil Suresh is contesting from the opposition parties. The decision for the post of Speaker will be taken by voting today on Wednesday.

The NDA alliance has 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and the opposition alliance INDIA has 233 members. It is believed that the opposition can also get the support of 3 independent MPs. At the same time, many independent and small political parties can also support the NDA. BJP’s allies TDP and JDU have also fully supported Om Birla. It is believed that Om Birla will once again succeed in becoming the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Let us tell you that after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from Wayanad, the total number of members in the House is 542.

The election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker today (26 June) is going to be historic in itself. This will be the first time since 1976 that elections will be held for the Speaker. Earlier in independent India, elections for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker were held only three times in 1952, 1967 and 1976. Since independence, only MA Iyengar, GS Dhillon, Balram Jakhar and GMC Balayogi have remained on the post of Speaker in the next Lok Sabhas.

According to the information received, discussions were held between Congress leader KC Venugopal and DMK’s TR Balu, Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister and BJP President JP Nadda in the office of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Parliament House with the aim of building a consensus on the issue of the Speaker’s post. However, both sides remained adamant on their stand and it did not yield any result. Venugopal alleged that the government did not show commitment to give the post of Deputy Speaker to the opposition.

Congress and other opposition parties said that according to tradition, the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha should go to the opposition and if the government agrees on this, then they will support the government for the post of Speaker. Congress said that the ball is now in the government’s court to build a consensus on this issue because according to tradition, the post of Deputy Speaker should go to the opposition.
