Due to rains, landslides hit supply, tomato rates touch ₹350 per kg in Chandigarh.

Chandigarh: The price of tomato in Chandigarh is skyrocketing, one kg is being sold for Rs 350, the most expensive in the country

On Thursday, the retail price of tomato in Mandi was Rs.300 to Rs.350 per kg, whereas in other metros of the country, tomatoes were sold at Rs.140 to Rs.150 per kg in retail.
Heavy rains and floods and landslides in Punjab-Himachal have also affected the prices of vegetables. There are no vegetables in the market, and the prices of those available are skyrocketing. Especially tomato has gone out of reach of the common man. The retail price of tomato in Chandigarh mandi is up to Rs 350 per kg, which is the highest in the country.

Told that due to heavy rains in Himachal and Punjab, the tomato crop has rotted in the fields. Farmers could not work in the field during the rainy season. The goods that came out of the fields could not reach Chandigarh due to the closure of the road. Due to both these reasons, there has been a jump in the prices of other vegetables including tomatoes.

While in other metros of the country, tomatoes were sold in retail at Rs 140 to 150 per kg. The wholesale price of tomato in Chandigarh mandi was close to Rs 250 per kg on Thursday. In bulk, a crate of 20 to 25 kg was sold for Rs 5,000 to 6,000.
Brijmohan said that tomato prices are expected to come down in Chandigarh in the next 24 to 48 hours, because after the stoppage of supply from Punjab and Himachal, now three truckloads of tomatoes have been ordered from Bangalore mandi, which will reach Chandigarh soon. After this the prices are expected to come down to Rs 160 to 180 per kg.
