Roorkee, 28 Dec 2023: Six laborers were buried alive under the debris after the wall of a brick kiln collapsed on Tuesday morning in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. As soon as the accident happened there was an outcry. On the other hand, the relatives of the deceased and the villagers created a ruckus demanding compensation. Also refused to pick up the dead body. Due to which a heated argument broke out between the villagers and the police.
Forces from nearby police stations and Kotwali were called on the spot. At the same time, efforts were made by the District Magistrate and SSP to understand the villagers. But the villager remained adamant on his demand for compensation of Rs 10 to 15 lakh.
After about an hour of uproar, when the demand for compensation was met, the villagers allowed the dead bodies to be taken away. An amount of Rs 3.5 lakh each has been announced by the brick kiln owner and Rs 2.5 lakh each by the Chief Minister as compensation to the family of the deceased. After this, the police sent the five bodies to Roorkee Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

Police officers including SP Dehat reached the spot. When the bodies of five laborers were taken out, they saw that the condition of three laborers was critical and they were admitted to the hospital. Where a laborer died, SSP and DM also reached the spot, took stock of the situation and talked to the villagers. SSP Haridwar Pramendra Dobal said that ten laborers are injured. He is undergoing treatment. Strict action will be taken in the matter.
