Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand – Nehru Mountaineering Institute has started celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Year from this year itself. To make it special, the institute prepared a plan to conquer the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.
Nehru Mountaineering Institute in Uttarkashi was established in the year 1965 in the memory of the country’s first Prime Minister, Late Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. It is one of the famous mountaineering institutes of the country. Since its inception, the institute has made many big achievements in its name. To make it special, a plan has been prepared to conquer the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8848 meters).
Principal of NIM, Colonel Anshuman Bhadauria said that climbing Mount Everest is proposed next year as part of the Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations. Even before this, the team of the institute has successfully climbed Mount Everest twice in the year 2009 and 2021.
The intention is to put the institute on the world map. For this, special attention is being paid to training, infrastructure development and equipment. Efforts are also being made to carry out joint training and mountaineering expeditions with big institutions in the country and abroad. -Colonel Anshuman Bhadauria, Principal Nim.
Till now more than 31 thousand people have been trained
Till now the institute has given training to 31500 youth in mountaineering courses like Basic, Advanced, Method of Instruction, Search and Rescue etc. Which also includes 691 foreigners. There is enthusiasm among the youth for the basic and advanced courses of NIM. Due to which advance booking is also done in these.
Kedarnath Reconstruction – In the Kedarnath disaster of 2013, NIM played a big role in relief and rescue work and reconstruction. Then, under the leadership of the then Principal of NIM, Colonel Ajay Kotiyal, the team of the institute had left for Kedarnath.
Indoor Climbing Wall-Nim has designed the country’s first indoor sports climbing artificial wall as per international standards. In which the rope is released automatically from the auto weel machine.
Himalayan Museum – NIM has prepared the Himalayan Museum at a cost of about Rs 15 crore. In which objects related to Himalayan folk culture and art along with mountaineering have been preserved. However, it has not been inaugurated yet.
Climbing unnamed peaks – NIM had climbed four unnamed peaks in the Raktavan region in the year 2018 in a joint expedition with Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. Which has also been recorded as an achievement by Limca Book of Records.
Everest Expedition- Apart from the year 2009, in the year 2021, Nim has been involved in the Everest expedition. In 2021, a joint six-member expedition team of NIMH and Jammu and Kashmir-based Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering (JIM) hoisted the tricolor on Mount Everest.
National Sports Climbing Championship-Nim hosted the three-day National Sports Climbing Championship for the first time in the year 2022. In which about 150 climbers participated.
MTB Cycling Expedition-Last year Nim had successfully completed the MTB Cycling Expedition. Under which cycling started from the frontier Nelong Valley and a total distance of 1062 km was covered through 11 districts.
